Passau - Day 1
The Danube Waltz with Viking
Last month I was invited by Viking on a cruise along the Danube. I had never been on a cruise before and I was very interested in the whole experience. The places on the itinerary were wonderful so iPhone and passport in hand I headed to Munich and then Passau to start this surprise adventure.
This wonderful Bavarian town was the starting point of my cruise along the Danube with Viking.
Known as the City of Three Rivers, Passau sits right on the German-Austrian border, where the Danube, Inn and Ilz meet.
Viking had organised a relaxed walking tour through the old town, and as a group we wandered its cobbled streets, taking in the history and the detail. Having a local guide always brings these places to life.

We made our way to St. Stephen’s Cathedral — an incredibly beautiful building, known for its bright white interior, Italian Baroque design, and one of the largest cathedral organs in the world.
From there, we crossed the main square, surrounded by elegant historic buildings… although, in true Gary style, I got slightly distracted by the architecture and lost the group for a moment.
After regrouping, a few of us climbed up to Veste Oberhaus Fortress, where the views over the city were absolutely worth it.

We finished the afternoon with a well-earned drink, before heading back to the boat and sailing on to the next destination.
The fact we would arrive in another location by morning was really exciting, I couldn’t wait to arrive, but first, three course dinner!

I receive Viking brochures regularly. I’m not a cruise-type of traveler but I always wondered about their river cruises. You brought it to life and sounds like a fantastic travel experience.
Good photos -- I enjoyed that!
I've subscribed in hope of you letting me tag along for the rest of the trip (here on Substack :-)
